#### Overview Yogic Philosophy mostly rest on _Patanjali's Yoga Sutras_ (and the many commentaries thereof) with support from the _Bhagavad Gita_. #### Core Texts _Patanjali's Yoga Sutras_ - [[YP - Yoga Sutras]] _The Bhagavad Gita_ - [[YP - Bhagavad Gita]] #### Core Concepts Yoga Sutra Book 1 _1:1-4_ Provides a definition of yoga, the result of yoga, and state we are in otherwise. _1:5-11_ Lists various types of thoughts which cause fluctuations in the mind and describes them. _1:12-22_ How the influences of thoughts can be constrained and potential states achieved. _1:23-29_ Introduces Ishvara and how meditating on aspects of it can produce positive results. _1:30-39_ Lists states which are obstacles to yoga and suggestions for overcoming them. _1:40-51_ Describes benefits and attained knowledge from practicing yoga. Yoga Sutra Book 2 _2:1-2_ Introduction of Kriya Yoga (the main practices which make the core of yoga practice). _2:3-17_ List of the causes of suffering, as defined in the yogic tradition and describes them. _2:18-23_ Statements on the Universe and its pupose. _2:24-28_ Describes ignorance and how yoga can remove it. _2:29-55_ Introduces the eight limbs of yoga, and describes what they are and what they produce, ending the chapter on pratyahra (the fifth limb). Yoga Sutra Book 3 _3:1-56_ This entire book focuses on the last three of the eight limbs, and details powers and knowledge attained through the application of these final three limbs.
